I want to share a correspondence that has taken place between myself and Senator Obama. Since I closed the DNC with a benediction, people have asked whether I know the Senator and whether we’ve met. Barack Obama and I have had an ongoing e-mail correspondence for several months, the bulk of which I have posted for you.
It all started when I attended a rally here in Portland at which more than 75,000 people showed to support the Senator. Somehow, I managed to get a spot close to the stage and during his speech the Senator pointed at me and told me “Yes, I could,” something I think he stole from the Black Eyed Pea’s, but oh well. Anyway, I was moved by the speech, but I had questions. I can do what? At the time, I was trying to pick paint colors for the living room, but was frozen between Icelandic Blue and Mossy-Rock Green.
To my amazement, Barack e-mailed me shortly thereafter. I don’t know if it is appropriate to share our personal correspondence, but I offer it to you anyway. I’ve posted Barack’s e-mails followed by my responses.
FIRST E-MAIL FROM BARACK:
Dear Donald,
You did it!
Not just yesterday, but every day for more than a year, you did what the cynics said we couldn’t do.
You said the time has come to get beyond the same old tactics that divide and distract us, and you gave people a reason to believe again.
We’re within reach of the nomination, and we are ready to take this country in a new direction.
Thank you for your continued support, and for everything you’ve done to make this possible.
Barack
MY RESPONSE:
Mr. Obama,
Wow. I’m shocked. How did you get my e-mail address? I gave my e-mail address to a cute hippie with a clip board. Did you get my address from her? Do you know her? Can you ask her to call me? Anyway, no biggie, just cool that you wrote.
I wanted to talk to you after the rally but the guy with the curly earphones said you were busy. As for your e-mail, I don’t remember saying “the time has come to get beyond the same old tactics that divide and distract us,” but that’s exactly how I feel. I say a lot of things I don’t remember. My roommate Jordan said I said he could eat my leftover calzone from Pizzicatta but I don’t remember saying that and I know I was planning on having it for breakfast the next day.
Anyway, I hear you are going to Europe. I was thinking about trying to get over there myself but the exchange rate is nuts. My friend Karl said he paid nine bucks for a pint. That’s out of my league. Are you backpacking? Staying in hostels? Watch out in Amsterdam, that place is crazy. Write back about that hippie girl.
I gotta go.
Don
SECOND E-MAIL FROM BARACK:
Donald –
Right now you have a unique opportunity to go head-to-head with George W. Bush.
This week, John McCain and George Bush gathered behind closed doors, away from the cameras, to raise money for McCain’s campaign.
McCain used Bush to raise a reported $3.5 million from a group of about 500 Republican contributors.
That’s a lot of money that will undoubtedly be used to attack us and make the case to continue George Bush’s policies.
John McCain can run from the cameras, but he can’t hide from the fact he’s aiming to continue George Bush’s policies for a disastrous third term.
Let’s show that we’re ready to take him on. Donate to the campaign today.
Thank you,
Barack
MY RESPONSE:
Barack, dude, that first line freaked me out. For a second I was like, no way, he’s surrounded by secret service. And then I was picturing some kind of fight club in the basement of the White House where Dick Cheney and Karl Rove pummel each other in order to “feel.” Did you see that movie? Chuck Palhniuk is from Portland, you know. He’s a bit strange.
To be honest, man, I’m strapped for cash right now. I bought a couple t-shirts at the rally and a bumper-sticker but that’s all the money I had. I should have some money coming in next week and I’ll float you something. Do you need to pick up a flag pin? I’ve got one if you need it. It was my uncles.
Later,
Don
P.S. My friends call me Don, so it’s cool.
THIRD E-MAIL FROM BARACK:
Donald –
I’m about to take the stage in St. Paul and announce that we have won the Democratic nomination for President of the United States.
It’s been a long journey, and we should all pause to thank Hillary Clinton, who made history in this campaign. Our party and our country are better off because of her.
It’s going to take hard work, but thanks to you and millions of other donors and volunteers, no one has ever been more prepared for such a challenge.
Thank you for everything you’ve done to get us here. Let’s keep making history.
Barack
MY RESPONSE:
Barack,
Sorry I missed your e-mail. Did you already give your speech? Do you get this on an I-Phone? My friend Wade and me (he was standing next to me at the Portland rally) ran down to the river because somebody said Starbucks was giving away Frappacino’s. Half true, though. It was just free samples. But Wade and I kept walking around this pole to get back in line and I filled up half a Nalgene before they told me to stop.
Very cool about Hillary. Sometimes you just have to talk it through, you know. I just think it’s cool you guys can be friends. I’m not married but I know my married friends are always looking for other couples to hang out with.
Let me know how that speech went.
Don
P.S. Also, did you give Al Gore my e-mail address? It’s cool, I just hadn’t heard from him before. We’re friends on facebook, but what does that mean anymore. And please, everybody calls me Don.
An E-Mail from Michelle Obama, came shortly after I was asked to give the closing prayer at the DNC.
FIRST E-MAIL FROM MICHELE OBAMA:
Donald –
Barack likes to tell a story about the two of us standing backstage before his speech at the 2004 Democratic Convention.
The way he tells it, he was too busy in the days before the convention to feel any pressure — but about an hour before the speech, I could tell he was getting a little nervous.
To break the tension, right before he went out on stage I leaned in close and said, “Just don’t screw it up, buddy.”
We laughed. And then Barack brought the house down.
Barack’s speech at this year’s convention will be a culmination of the unlikely journey that has brought all of us so far over the past 17 months.
Seeing it in person will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I’m excited about being there, and if you make a donation of $5 or more before the deadline, you could join Barack backstage. Donate today and you will be registered to join us!
Thanks for everything you’ve done to get us here.
Michelle
MY RESPONSE:
Mrs. Obama,
It’s a pleasure to hear from you. You look lovely all the time. Are we all going to hang out in Denver? I think it’s awesome they asked me to pray.
I just want you to know, I’m not one of those cigar-smoking guys that is going to have your husband out on the back deck shooting b.b. guns till midnight. I don’t know if you made contact to try to feel me out or not, but I’m not like that. I like a cigar every once in a while, but it’s not that big of a deal.
That is awesome what you said to Barack before the 2004 speech, about not screwing it up. That was the first time I saw him speak and I was blown away. But could you not say that to me before my prayer? Please. I just get really, really nervous. I nearly wet my pants before that talk at Harvard. I know it’s just a three-minute prayer, but could you just kind of nod at me when it’s my turn to walk out there? I am just going to listen to my headphones beforehand, like Michael Phelps.
Also, I don’t have to follow him, do I? He’s not going to do the yes you can one, is he? Think he’d be willing to tone it down a bit, so I don’t look bad?
I look forward to meeting you. I don’t hardly watch football anymore. Just on Sundays, and never when I am at somebody else’s house. No biggie, just saying.
Sincerely,
Donald
P.S. So do I have to register to get a pass. A lady named Kitty called and said there would be a packet at the hotel. What room are you guys in?
FINAL E-MAIL FROM BARACK:
Donald –
As you may have heard, 10 supporters will be joining me backstage before I accept the nomination at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.
The people who make up our movement are of all different ages, races, and backgrounds — and these folks are no different.
They each bring their own unique perspectives and experience, and they are united by their hunger for change.
If you cannot make it to Denver, you can get together with your friends and family and watch my acceptance speech at a Convention Watch Party.
Thank you for your belief in our ability to bring real change to this country. You continue to grow and strengthen our movement in ways no one thought possible.
Barack
MY RESPONSE:
Barack,
Cool about the other guys. Are they fraternity guys? It’s just not my crowd, that’s all. But no big deal.
I can make it to Denver. I told Michelle but she hasn’t e-mailed back. Kitty said my rehearsal would be on Sunday and I could use the teleprompter. Do they control the text from the sound-booth or can you scroll up and down with a button of your own? Have you ever looked through the teleprompter and got eye-locked with somebody and messed up?
Are the other guys giving a prayer, too?
It’s really cool you guys invited me to come. It’s an honor, to be honest. I think it’s great that you pray. I pray too. Tell Michelle I say hello. See you soon.
Sincerely,
Donald
P.S. Can you get Hannah Montana tickets? They aren’t for me, they’re for my niece. I told her I would ask.
•••••
So that’s it. I’m not saying we’re best friends, but I think he’s a pretty good guy for making contact and keeping in touch.
The convention was great. I actually did meet Michelle Obama and she was striking and friendly. She, her brother Craig, and the Obama children came into a room where I was sitting backstage, and for a few minutes it was just us. It was so strange to see this woman who was about to go out and address the nation and I’m telling you, she wasn’t nervous at all. She was just another mother hanging out with her kids. I don’t know how she remained so composed. It was really an honor to be back there.
So this is the new blog. I’ll try to keep it light and funny, because I’m not big on controversy. I think most of it is hype, to be honest. But if you want to chime in, I’ve finally got a way for you to leave comments.
Best,
Don

I hope i can call you don. I know, as you mentioned, that name is reserved for your friends, but I consider you a friend, although I have only met you once at the echo conference, and honestly you were a bit of an asshole. But I forgive you because that’s what friends are for. Thanks for the email!! I can’t wait to brag to all of my other friends that one of my better friends, whom I call by his half name because we are such good friends, actually has corresponding emails with Barack Obama and his wife. Right on dude, I’m proud to know you. Keep up the good work.

I’m starting to think that the emails Barack sent me he’s sent to other people, too.
But that would be just wrong and tear at the fabric of the friendship I felt we’ve been forging over this time.

Thanks Don,

The thing is Obama has been emailing me for months. But he keeps calling me Tim. THat’s my husband’s name. See, I did donate to his campaign once. Only I didn’t have my Debit card with me at the time. SO I borrowed my husbands. Now I get emails from Obama nearly everyday. Only they keep calling me Tim. Next time you all talk could you tell him that it was really me and that my name is Karen? I’m the one who gave the money. Tim only let me borrow his Debit card. It’s weird to get email addressed to him at my addy all the time. Besides, I wear too much lipstick to look like a Tim.

Yeah I saw you doing that prayer live and saw your name up there but thought it was just some other Don Miller and my friend and I even joked about it being you (we couldn’t tell you were praying, CNN was talking over you.) Then I saw on your site yesterday that it was you and got pretty excited.
Ironically, when I would comment on your Ride blog and as I’m commenting here I feel like you do e-mailing Barack. Haha.

Hey. That’s funny. Obama has been emailing me too. Only he keeps calling me Tim. That’s not my name. That’s my husband’s name. See, I gave a donation to the campaign once. But I didn’t have my debit card so I borrowed Tim’s. Ever since Obama has called me Tim. Joe Biden calls me Tim, too. Michelle Obama even calls me Tim. The thing is I don’t even look like a Tim. I wear too much lipstick to be mistaken for a Tim. I’ve emailed them and asked them all to call me Karen but they still get it wrong. TIm thinks it’s funny. But I’m a little annoyed by it. Especiall since I did pay him back the money I donated using his debit card. I was kind of hoping he’d forget I owed him that. I’m sneaky that way.
So next time y’all email could you tell him about this and ask him to please call me Karen?

Don,
I am reviewing Searching for God Knows What this Sunday for my church. (www.lancbic.org) Every year for Labor Day Sunday there are book reviews for Sunday school since attendance is sadly poor on this particular Sunday. Anyway, I was wondering if there was anything specific that you would like mentioned about your book? I mean, I only read the book, you WROTE it.
Oh and if you are ever in Lancaster, PA, drop me a line, my email was entered in your blog response thingy. My wife and I would love to invite you for dinner. Our house isn’t always the tidiest, but I got the impression that you weren’t terribly formal about that sort of thing. You’d even get a place to crash if you need one. If it’s a Saturday, you could attend church with us. Do you like smallish churches?
I was told via a personality test recently that hospitality wasn’t one of my strong points. I am hoping to improve.
I’m not really looking for a response to any of this, I just hope it amused you and your blog readers. The offer of dinner is legit though!!

Don,
It’s really cool that Obama took the time to e-mail you. It’s always cool when someone famous writes to you. I used to get letters from Jerry Falwell regularly, but it got kind of weird because he kept asking me for money all the time. I asked him if he ever heard that U2 song where Bono said, “the God I believe in isn’t short of cash.” I wonder if that offended him because Bono even mentioned the Old Time Gospel Hour. Mr. Falwell didn’t answer my question. Instead, he sent me another letter asking for a donation.

I am really freaked out now, because your emails look eerily similar to the emails Barack and Co. has been sending to ME all this time! I thought Mr. Obama and I had some thing special, but I see now that it was all an illusion, something used to get more support for his “campaign”, which I guess is what he calls his “friendships” these days. I feel so cheated. So very disillusioned.

By the way, I really enjoy an egg salad sandwich do you think we could meet to have one someday soon?
Casey
P.S. I like to bike ride too. I just got my chain oiled so I can ride really fast now. Maybe we could go for a ride after our sandwich?

Hey Don,
I agree with Deb, better check out William Ayers and some other things before you become so enamored in Barry. I wonder why they don’t give his full name???
Barak Hussein Obama…why would someone change his name to that? I am not saying McCane is the answer, but Barry sure isn’t!!
Trying to make him sound more American by calling him - “Barry”?

Imagine the shock and disappointment I experienced as I learned my personal Obama emails weren’t so personal after all. What is this world coming to when a politician will lead me to believe something isn’t what it seems to be. I wonder of my McCain emails are equally as private?
Sorry I missed the DNC appearance maybe I can find it on YouTube or something.

You know what Don, as many letters of yours that I’ve read…I think we might be best friends too, LOL. Dang you. You are the most hillarious, random, terribly witty person out there and you almost made me choke on my cinnamon and spice oatmeal (not one packet but two…and that could have been deadly!)
No seriously….that is hillarious! I kept getting a vision of you when that first email arrived and you’re like Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber when he says…”So you’re telling me I’ve got a chance!”
You know what you really should have done is gone out there before the prayer aspect of your speech and drummed them up by saying…”We’ve got no jobs, we’ve got no food,… our pets heads are falling off!!!!” That would have had them trembling. Oh yeah. Then say something about the mortgage crisis or something else fancy like that.
Anyways… I watched part of the convention, but defintely am not decided. Gotta give McCain a chance to “represent”, LOL. But I can’t believe I missed seeing you on there. You should have sent me an email before hand. Ya know, since we’re such good friends and all. I did meet you once for like a nano second at the BWM banquet this year:)

Don-
I enjoyed reading through the correspondence. It was funny to me to read his emails because he kept calling you Donald and almost seemed to be responding to what he wanted you to write him and not what you wrote. Thanks for your ministry and books, they have helped me look at things in a new way. I’ll pray that you are able to stay humble with everyone telling you that you are awesome all the time. Seriously that must get hard. We serve an amazing savior.

Interesting. Good spoof on your “close” connection to Obama.
Unrelated to the email communication between you and Obama’s spam engine, my only comment relates to the DNC prayer, which sounded more like a political speech. Poverty, AIDS, caring for those that have less than we do…excellent. Just as I would expect Jesus to say. But when you included fair wages for teachers I thought, hmmm, sounds more like Democrat talking points. I mean, compared to those that haul trash, clean toilets, etc., teachers make a fairly good living. In Minnesota, they are making $50-70,000+ - with time off every summer!
Donald, I truly appreciate you, your words and thoughts, and how you inspire so many people. But I think you will lose your effectiveness when you begin to cross into the political arena. Addressing the needs of those afflicted with AIDS, those burdened with poverty, those that are hungry - I say drive on! And invite all of us on the bus. But using what could be described as talking points from the teacher’s union betrays a totally Christian perspective, and diminishes the impact of your overall message to help those in need.
I thank God for all you do and how you are using the gifts He’s blessed you with.
In Christ,
Tom

Also, I have two kids and lots of complications in my life. Most men, get skiddish and run. But I have a good sense of humor and hand out with a lot of guys who just want to be friends.
PS Barak doesn’t know me and won’t return my calls, but thanks for asking about me.

I read Blue Like Jazz. You are a good writer. As for your relationship with Barack and Michelle, I’m certain they are nice folks and that the time you have spent with them has been pleasent. However, it is clear to me that the emails you posted from Barack are generic in nature in order that they could be sent to a multitude of donors. The only thing that makes them “feel” personal in nature is the use of your name in the address.

This election confuses me, honestly. I don’t believe either candidate is “right” for the responsibility of running our country. I read articles, watch debates, even look at some polls but come away more convinced that I’m being forced to choose the lesser of two evils in one of the most important decisions of this decade (and I do believe this will be a history changing election…one way or the other).
Maybe a stupid question, but are you putting your support behind Barack Obama then?

I really liked your prayer. A lot. Thanks for not leaving out Jesus. I liked the thing you said. I am still struggling to decide who I will vote for, but if it wasn’t for you, the truth is, I wouldn’t even think about it. I’ve been wondering how you are doing… now that you are off the bike. Like is everyday life a bit of a letdown after two months of waking up every day and knowing you had to make it another 100 miles. But then, you go and have to pray before the entire freaking country… I guess it blows my theory that all you riders would have a bit of a letdown. In any case, it was fun to sit there the other night… and pray for you as you prayed… and say… I rode a bike with that guy… for about 5 minutes! Wink.

I fell for it, the “personal correspondence” thing. This was just the sort of hilarity I need to get me going in the morning. And, yes, the benedictory prayer was great! I guess you were reading the teleprompter, but you looked so cute and natural. It wasn’t the type of “ho-ho-ho-ho-ho-ly bow your head and close your eyes” prayer everybody expected. It was like you were sharing a personal conversation you’d had with the Father earlier. In fact, that’s what you were doing. We need to see more of that clean, honest-to-God spirituality, not the look-at-me-I’m-such-a-hot-Christian stuff. Thanks, uh, DONALD. (Well, I don’t really know you, right?)
TCS said,

Don,
that was GREAT, I think I will have to start responding to those e-mails that I get from your organization the same way. I used to have fun with telemarketers but my wife blocked them so that bit of fun is gone. But if you do still get telemarketers calling you, may I suggest my favorite tactic? Just tell them your naked. tell them it is your lifestyle and probably tells them all they need to know. My brother-in-law has a “I have to go to the bathroom REAL bad” line complete with a groan, followed by “but what you are saying sounds more important so please keep going” then he repeats.

Don, you and a friend of mine are the only people I know that take the time to respond to mass mails. He likes to bait the Nigerians who write scam letters offering to let him keep 15% of their $55 million fortune if they can use his bank account to transfer the money out of China. Or whatever.
I thought it was pretty cool that they even HAD a closing prayer at a convention full of people who seem hell-bent on keeping God out of everything… and then to find out you were the guy doing it. I was delighted at the news. I’ve read all your books, and recommended each, so I was expecting a pretty rich prayer when “Miller Time” came.
I did like the way you personalized our traditional “…in Jesus’ Name” — that was very sensitive to all the Jews, Muslims, Atheists, Jehovah Witnesses (oops, never mind… they don’t do politics) and evolutionists. They may not even realize how careful you were.
I admit though, I thought parts of your prayer were kind of lame and preachy, rather than intercessory (I can use big, Christian words, too). Like where you asked the God of the Universe to help us “figure out the balance between economic opportunity and corporate gluttony.” I immediately wondered how much corporate gluttony God would help us attain for that perfect balance. I, for one, think there should be at least some corporate gluttony (though I think there are less pejorative ways of saying that), but, like you, think we need God’s help in figuring out how much.
You rock, Don. Love your work, didn’t like the prayer, but I am in awe of your weight loss and what a strikingly handsome man you are now.
Looking forward to your next book,

Don,
Great way to kick off the blog. I was reading it out loud to my whole family and we all enjoyed it.
We met in Evansville, Indiana when you opened for Jars of Clay. My brother-in-law lives in Seattle I asked you if you knew about any good churches for a guy who doesn’t like church. It’s been two years since then and he still hasn’t gone to church. Would you give him a call? He likes your books.
Keep the blog light, it’s great.
Regards,
Billy

Wait a second… What the crap!?!? Barack sent me those SAME E-MAILS!!!! I’m thinking either a) Mr. Obama is not good at e-mails so he just writes the same thing over and over to all of his friends (you’d think he’d get tired of that after a while). Or b)Somehow, Don, our e-mail addresses got crossed and we were both getting the exact same e-mail from our good friend Barack. Either way, he’s a good guy and I dig him.
By the way, I liked the prayer. Just a question: Were you directing those words to God or the people watching? Not in a hollier than thou, “Oh, look at me, I’m praying!” kind of way. But more of a “Hey guys, I’m sying this stuff to God… but you, politicians, should listen too because there are a lot of people that need help out there and hopefully these words will convict you.” kind of way. Know what I mean?
Okay, nice prayer anyway. You the man! Thanks. Yeah.

Hi Don,
You and I have a similar relationship as you and Obama. I “met” you at the Young Life conference in Orlando last January and we’ve been great friends ever since. I actually do know one of your friends, Brian Powell, but I won’t hold that against you.
I must tell you I cried like a baby when Michelle spoke. To see this African American woman who may be our First Lady just blew me away.
I do see the racism though, with some white people saying how they just don’t know the Obamas and don’t know what their values are, since they are so different and all.
Still, the dialogue thrills me and does indeed give me hope.

DEB,
If you have something to say about Barack and those extremists and their groups, maybe you should come right out and say it, rather than posting some veiled references (which, I assume, are supposed to lead us to believe that Barack wholeheartedly supports these extremists). If that’s the link you’re looking to establish, why don’t suggest it directly?
Barack has already publicly denounced some of the overarching rhetoric his former Reverend Wright has used. Regardless, unless you were black during the times of segregation, you’re in no position to criticize those who were for being extraordinarily angry.
Further, if you’re trying to establish a link between Ayers and Obama, why don’t you post some facts rather than tell people to “investigate.” Here’s some investigation I did:

Hey Don, I really enjoyed Blue Like Jazz and Painted Deserts.
You’re a very funny guy. I read your blog and paid attention to Obama and Michelle’s email responses and they seem a little bit automated, for lack of a better word. I’m sure they are nice people, and probably very busy what with the campaign and all. I just hope that their words aren’t the product of some slick advertising scheme, as I have seen so often. But that seems strange because you DID say the opening prayer…hmmm.
I thought that might have been your opinion too, because your responses seemed a little bit lampoon-ish (i.e, Starbucks, sunday football, and cigars)
You’re so funny. Anyway, I enjoyed reading this.

Wow, the Obamas must be really fast typers or really good with cut and paste or something. I’ve been getting emails from them too. But mine weren’t addressed to Donald, so they are taking the time to make them all personal. Pretty impressive. I wonder if they stay up late or get up early to write all their emails? Personally, I’d stay up late if I was them. I’m not much of a morning person.
BTW, I read on some guy’s blog that you are going to hell for going to a party with a bunch of sinners and praying for them. I’m not sure if he’s right, but I’d be careful if I were you. Play it safe and be a little more like Jesus. You never saw him hanging out at places like that.

Very clever, Don. You’re a wonderful writer and I’ve enjoyed your books, your candor and your willingness to mince no words.
So I won’t either. Your “prayer” (how much time did it take you to script that “prayer”?) was disappointing; you used a great opportunity to deliver a powerful, thoughtful message and turned it into a cheap political trick.
Any time someone scripts a prayer you just know something bad is going to happen. Tell me, is it a prayer just because you had the words “Lord” and “Jesus” in there; I mean, what makes this a prayer and not a speech?
You probably initially wrote, “Lord, please deliver us from the Republicans,” and then red-lined the phrase in the first draft. Frankly, with the laundry list of political wants and wishes in the “prayer,” I’m surprised you didn’t ask “that all the poor people get a pony for their children.”
So, yeah, I’m disappointed. Guess what? You’re just a normal guy, you wow folks, you disappoint folks. I’m not tossing out your books, not banning any thing you write from my house, I’m just saying…
And before anyone jumps on me, I’m a life long Democrat, just for the record.

Don,
I came to see you when you spoke at Bergfeld Park in Tyler, TX. I am proud of my community for being able to contribute as much as they did to the Blood/Water initiative. I have always loved your ideas about breaking away from conventional thinking within Christianity. It has shaped many of my beliefs today.
As a Christian I am deeply conflicted in supporting Obama or McCain. Your decision to support him is between you and God, so I will not judge you for it. I will choose not to. His long history of shady associations(Jeremiah Wright, William Ayers) is just too suspicious…especially after he dumped both of them as a political move. This alone shows me he is willing to do whatever to make himself look good, which makes it look like he is doing same dance politicians have been doing forever now. The smoke and mirrors has already started and he is just now getting nominated. I fear what he might do as president.
As for McCain, its pretty simple. He is war mongerer just like Bush. He insists on victory in a war that can’t be won..and at the same time he talks about scaling back government spending. How much are we spending on the war that can’t be won? Exactly.
So I will probably choose not to vote. Many Christians like to sell the “you have to vote” statement, but I’m not buying…not until they starts selling a candidate worth spending on.

Just seeing how this campaign has already SEPARATED us who believe in Christ is sickening! If we vote for Mccain or Obama, it shouldn’t be the determiner of whether we have faith in Christ or not. If anyone says it does, they need to look up in the Scriptures where it says anything of the sort. We should be worrying about the poor and the underprivileged, single mothers and the widows. Because those issues are Biblical. Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed for the #1 reason of ignoring and neglecting the poor and James says that true religion is taking care of the widows and orphans…let’s just do that

I love what you are doing. Washington does need to know that any one party isn’t the face of Christianity in the US. I’m intrigued by the strides you are talking about regarding the sanctity of life-sincerely. Anyways, I am sure you probably won’t have time to read this, but I commend you nonetheless! I think it is a little haughty to chime in and tell someone to “stay out of politics.” Maybe Don does support Obama, but he hasn’t said that in anything I’ve found. Consider the following “There is a long way to go, but sending a message to Washington that no single party has the Christian community in their pocket, thus causing each party to carefully consider the issues most important to us, is, in my opinion, a positive evolution. I am glad that, for the most part, the dialogue has been constructive and positive. Will you join me in keeping the conversation thoughtful and not reactionary?-www.donaldmillerwords.com”

There are so many comments on this post already that I feel fairly insignificant as I write this.
First of all, thank you for being a change and a new, fresh, quirky and inspiring voice in this world. I also commend you if you actually read 207 comments. I would like to think that you’d actually make it to my comment, but I skipped every one, so who knows?
I’m from Canada, so sadly I won’t be able to vote in your American election. I know how much your new president will change the world and I am all for Barak Obama.
Again, thank you for being a positive, influential voice and for trying to make a change in your country, and inevitably, in this world. I love your fresh take on Christianity and I love how you are so yourself, even when you are talking to Barak Obama who is quite the political celebrity.

Well I figure it’s about time to weigh in my words.
I thought it was pretty funny, and a very awesome joke.
I have to admit I opened the blog hoping to see a very deep and heartfelt discussion between you two and perhaps get to see a side of Obama that I am disappointed in not being able to see yet. But, this was just as good.
I keep on going back and forth on voting or not, but I don’t really see either of the candidates as the president I want. I was going for Huckabee myself.
Anyways, love your books, and love your thoughts on life with God. I’ll keep coming back here to see your thoughts.

For whatever reason, I busted out laughing when I read that (could be it was a Friday and I needed an emotional release.) Certainly, that was a serious conversation. But my mind felt trapped in a tangle of Oprah vs. Everyone loves Raymond by what you wrote. Thus the laughter, then followed by guilt and shame for laughing.
You have a way of captivating an audience. Brilliant!

Very clever post, although I would not expect any less from your writing as I have read all of your books and they continue to provide a consistent dose of enlightenment, wit and thought provoking opportunities. I enjoyed your prayer which you delivered at the DNC and praise you for taking the “high road” through the assorted controversy and hype. Had you mentioned to your buddy Paul during one of your road ramblings in your VW van that some day you would be giving the benediction at the DNC I am sure he would have accused you of getting a bad batch of rice and beans!
My company will be establishing their headquarters in Portland within the next year. We will be developing renewable energy projects among other assorted ventures which we hope will make a difference in peoples lives. One of my objectives is to establish relationships with local and regional non profits in an effort to assist them with their goals through our financial and professional support. That being said, I contacted Wade at the Belmont Foundation a few weeks back and will be meeting with him next week to discuss how we can be of assistance to their efforts.

Wow… its a bit of a rough crowd here isn’t it… but perhaps that is a GOOD thing? This isn’t really about Don is it? It’s about us?
I personally think its cool that Don can throw up a blog and get 300 comments in a day. Isn’t that the beauty of his writing? That God has used him to really reach across a lot of barriers… so some call him hero and others heretic? And I don’t “know” Don… but I have met him, and I would bet he just wants to mostly get out of the way for the sake of Jesus.
I am a recovering ex-Religious Right guy… I don’t really know how I would “label” myself now… but I think in the end, Republicans and Dobson and I myself have done more to hurt the Kingdom than Obama could do. Not sure who I will vote for.
The truth is aren’t we Christians to blame for all of this mess? Each and every one of us. We haven’t loved people enough. We had a chance to impact people at the level of the heart in the last few decades especially, but we blew it. We got more interested in cars and trips and nice houses and big churches, and home schooling and “protecting” something. We got so hung up on issues like abortion and homosexuality, and those sorts of things that we really forgot to love people enough? I know I did. And so now we have reached this sad point where quite a few people will hear the name “Jesus” and think something horrible. I think if I was a non-Christian, I would think most Christians are very selfish.
I guess I believe that Jesus is neither Republican nor Democrat… and I think he would find plenty to absolutely love and rip apart in BOTH platforms.
Don writes books. He writes books. Books that help people to get into a deeper relationship with Jesus. You have views, Don has views. Aren’t we all just jealous that Don has a larger forum for his views than we do? And isn’t it possible that Don is exactly where he needs to be and that God has put him there? That Don “gets it” and we don’t. That the tide has turned and we are a post-Christian nation, and that this has become a MORE liberal and “Democratic” nation and Don being in the midst of this as a voice of sincere faith in Jesus is a great thing?
Don praying at the DNC, supporting Obama (he does… google his interview with Christianity Today regarding his praying at the DNC/or read the early entries in his bike blog), wanting to elicit change in our country… none of those are anti-Christian. Are we all so self-absorbed in our own fragile ideologies and interpretation of what is most important that if one of our favorite authors differs from us on some points that the world falls apart? God is bigger than this.
And isn’t it a little easy to pick apart and criticize certain things about someone elses prayer. I mean… gosh… what would you say when the entire nation is your audience and you feel like you have got one good shot…? I think I would pee my pants. I’m just glad he mentioned Jesus. There was a lot to balance… I think he did it well.
I think Don is a really good guy. And having heard him speak I know he is a sincere follower of Jesus Christ. He has some different ways of viewing the world. He is imperfect, and so am I, and so are you. He is just a man. And I am confident Don knows that.
Just my thoughts… sorry for the long post.

Donald - those emails from Barack seemed very canned to me. Like a blast-out email he would send with a mailer program - using a list of names.
Your responses seemed so, how can I put this…really dumb. I don’t intend to sound mean, but either you edited out a bunch of stuff or your replies were off-topic and didn’t seem to make much sense to me…mostly I guess because he never answered any of your questions. That cute hippy chick was getting everyone’s name and email address so Barack could hit you with an email blast…
Maybe I just don’t get it…
By the way, have you heard the song “Cult of Personality” by Living Color? That sums up Barack for me. He is all personality and no substance. He is a charmer - and you know what Proverbs says about charm - it is deceitful.
Barack has accomplished nothing of substance…has very little experience and is running on his personality. I feel sorry for so many who are being deceived by him.
OBAMA’S “NOT EXACTLY’S”
1.) Selma Got Me Born - NOT EXACTLY, your parents felt safe enough to have you in 1961 - Selma had no effect on your birth, as Selma was in 1965. (Google’ Obama Selma ‘ for his full March 4, 2007 speech and articles aboutits various untruths.)
2.) Father Was A Goat Herder - NOT EXACTLY, he was a privileged, well educated youth, who went on to work with the Kenyan Government.
3.) Father Was A Proud Freedom Fighter - NOT EXACTLY, he was part of one of the most corrupt and violent governments Kenya has ever had.
4.) My Family Has Strong Ties To African Freedom - NOT EXACTLY, your cousin Raila Odinga has created mass violence in attempting to overturn a legitimate election in 2007, in Kenya It is the first widespread v iolence in decades. The current government is pro-American but Odinga wants to overthrow it and establish Muslim Sharia law. Your half-brother, Abongo Obama, is Odinga’s follower. You interrupted your New Hampshire campaigning to speak to Odinga on the phone. Obama’s cousin Odinga in Kenya ran for president and tried to get Sharia muslim law in place there. When Odinga lost the elections, his followers have burned Christians’ homes and then burned men, women and children alive in a Christian church where they took shelter.. Obama SUPPORTED his cousin before the election process here started. Google Obama and Odinga and see what you get. No one wants to know the truth.
5.) My Grandmother Has Always Been A Christian - NOT EXACTLY, she does her daily Salat prayers at 5am according to her own interviews. Not to mention,Christianity wouldn’t allow her to have been one of 14 wives to 1 man.
6.) My Name is African Swahili - NOT EXACTLY, your name is Arabic and ‘Baraka’ (from which Barack came) means ‘blessed’ in that language. Hussein is also Arabic and so is Obama.
Barack Hussein Obama is not half black. If elected, he would be the first Arab-American President, not the first black President. Barack Hussein Obama is 50% Caucasian from his mother’s side and 43.75% Arabic and 6.25% African Negro from his father’s side. While Barack Hussein Obama’s father was from Kenya , his father’s family was mainly Arabs.. Barack Hussein Obama’s father was only 12.5% African Negro and 87.5% Arab (his father’s birth certificate &n bsp;even states he’s Arab, not African Negro). From….and for more….go to…..

7.) I Never Practiced Islam - NOT EXACTLY, you practiced it daily at school, where you were registered as a Muslim and kept that faith for 31 years, until your wife made you change, so you could run for office. 4-3-08 Article “Obama was ‘quite religious in islam’ http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=60559
8 .) My School In Indonesia was Christian - NOT EXACTLY, you were registered as Muslim there and got in trouble in Koranic Studies for making faces (check your own book). February 28, 2008. Kristoff from the New York Times a year ago: Mr.Obama recalled the opening lines of the Arabic call to prayer, reciting them with a first-rate accent. In a remark that seemed delightfully uncalculated (it’ll give Alabama voters heart attacks), Mr. Obama described the call toprayer as “one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.” This is just one example of what Pamela is talking about when she says “Obama’s narrative is being altered, enhanced and manipulated to whitewash troubling facts.”
9.) I Was Fluent In Indonesian - NOT EXACTLY, not one teacher says you could speak the language.
10. ) Because I Lived In Indonesia , I Have More Foreign Experience - NOT EXACTLY, you were there from the ages of 6 to 10, and couldn’t even speak the language. What did you learn, how to study the Koran and watch cartoons.
11.) I Am Stronger On Foreign Affairs - NOT EXACTLY, except for Africa (surprise) and the Middle East (bigger surprise), you have never beenanywhere else on the planet and thus have NO experience with our closest allies.
12.) I Blame My Early Drug Use On Ethnic Confusion- NOT EXACTLY, you were quite content in high school to be Barry Obama, no mention of Kenya and no mention of struggle to identify - your classmates said you were just fine.
13.) An Ebony Article Moved Me To Run For Office - NOT EXACTLY, Ebony has yet to find the article you mention in your book. It doesn’t, and never did, exist.
14.) A Life Magazine Article Changed My outlook on Life - NOT EXACTLY, Life has yet to find the article you men tion in your book. It doesn’t, and never did, exist.
15.) I Won’t Run On A National Ticket In ‘08 - NOT EXACTLY, here you are, despite saying, live on TV, that you would not have enough experience by then, and you are all about having experience first.
16.) Voting “Present” is Common In Illinois Senate - NOT EXACTLY, they are common for YOU, but not many others have 130 NO VOTES.
17.) Oops, I Misvoted - NOT EXACTLY, only when caught by church groups and Democrats, did you beg to change your misvote.
18.) I Was A Professor Of Law - NOT EXACTLY, you were a senior lecturer ON LEAVE.
19.) I Was A C onstitutional Lawyer - NOT EXACTLY, you were a senior lecturer ON LEAVE.
20.) Without Me, There Would Be No Ethics Bill - NOT EXACTLY, you didn’t write it, introduce it, change it, or create it.
21.) The Ethics Bill Was Hard To Pass - NOT EXACTLY, it took just 14 days from start to finish.
22.) I Wrote A Tough Nuclear Bill - NOT EXACTLY, your bill was rejected by your own party for its pandering and lack of all regulation - mainlybecause of your Nuclear donor, Exelon, from which David Axelrod came.
23.) I Have Released My State Records - NOT EXACTLY, as of March, 2008, state bills you sponsored or voted for have yet to be released, exposing all the special interests pork hidden within.
24.) I Took On The Asbestos Altgeld Gardens Mess - NOT EXACTLY, you were part of a large group of people who remedied Altgeld Gardens . You failed to mention anyone else but yourself, in your books.
25.) My Eco nomics Bill Will Help America - NOT EXACTLY, your 111 economic policies were just combined into a proposal which lost 99-0, and even YOU voted against your own bill.
26.) I Have Been A Bold Leader In Illinois - NOT EXACTLY, even your own supporters claim to have not seen BOLD action on your part.
27.) I Passed 26 Of My Own Bills In One Year - NOT EXACTLY, they were not YOUR bills, but rather handed to you, after their creation by a fellowSenator, to assist you in a future bid for higher office.
28.) No One on my campaign contacted Canada about NAFTA - NOT EXACTLY, the Candian Government issued the names and a memo of the conversation your campaign had with them.
29.) I Am Tough On Terrorism - NOT EXACTLY, you missed the Iran Resolution vote on terrorism and your good friend Ali Abunimah supports the destruction of Israel
30.) I Want All Votes To Count - NOT EXACTLY, you said let the delegates decide.
31.) I Want Americans To Decide - NOT EXACTLY, you prefer caucuses that limit the vote, confuse the voters, force a public vote, and only operate during small windows of time.
32.) I passed 900 Bills in the State Senate - NOT EXACTLY, you passed 26, most of which you didn’t write yourself.
33.) I Believe In Fairness, Not Tactics - NOT EXACTLY, you used tactics to eliminate Alice Palmer from running against you.
34.) I Don’t Take PAC Money - NOT EXACTLY, you take loads of it.
35.) I don’t Have Lobbysists - NOT EXACTLY, you have over 47 lobbyists, and counting.
36.) My Campaign Had Nothing To Do With The 1984 Ad - NOT EXACTLY, your own campaign worker made the ad on his Apple in one afternoon.
37.) I Have Always Been Against Iraq - NOT EXACTLY, you weren’t in office to vote against it AND you have voted to fund it every single time.
38.) I Have Always Supported Universal Health Care - NOT EXACTLY, your plan leaves us all to pay for the 15,000,000 who don’t have to buy it.
GOD HELP US IF WE JUST SIT IDLY BY AND LET THIS PERSON BECOME OUR NEXTPRESIDENT. IT WOULD BE SUICIDAL FOR US TO DO NOTHING TO PREVENT THIS
FROM HAPPENING. PASS THIS ON TO ALL THE ONES YOU VALUE, JUST AS I AM DOING. IT’S TIME THE “SILENT MAJORITY” TAKE A STAND! GET OUT AND VOTE! PLEASE!

Seriously! You have the opportunity to talk with a man who is EXTREMELY influential and you seem to go out of your way to talk about stupid crap. It seems like you try really hard to sound simple. You should take yourself more serious. And try looking into Thomas Sowell, Shelby Steele, and Milton Friedman to get some of your misperceptions of this world and inequality and injustice straightened out. You should really get a clue. I mean, really it’s brilliant how you call out the foolishness of the political institution, as well as bring to light the absolute necessity of the individual to be heard and cared for in a personal way. Remember to keep praying, striving for justice and maintaining peace, which are all good things to continue to do. Peace and blessings to you, my friend.

If you came to my house on a Sunday, you could watch really good football - we have that here in Fort Worth (because of our friends and soon-to-be-Super-Bowl-champs the Dallas Cowboys). We have it on Friday nights too. But then, you probably remember that. Do they even play football in the Northwest? I am concerned about your Texanness devolving to where you don’t watch football at friends’ houses anymore. Maybe it’s time to come home and re-up your membership.

Don,
I have been reading your books. Blue Like jazz first and now I’m on to Searching For God Knows What. Blue Like Jazz was my favorite. It was recommended to me by my pastor Brandon Dickerson from Ecclesia church in Hollywood. I have never met him just e-mailed once and he mentioned your book. I haven’t been to church in a while though cus I signed up for “clean team” (cleaning the bathrooms and such every random Sunday morning) and I have had to cancel so many times. I guess I’m a little embarrassed I couldn’t keep my commitment. I’m sure God dosen’t mind so much and would rather me in the seats Sunday then sleeping in. I do love Ecclesia. Anyway, I am glad to be able to write you here, hope you read it and shoot me an e-mail (skeewat@aol.com). When I heard you were making a movie of Blue Like Jazz I searched the internet for info on it. Had it been made yet, who’s casting, ect.. didn’t really find much info. I could play anyone of the female characters. Maybe it’s already in the can but if not… can I audition for you? Ha!

It would be nice to believe we’re not in a certain party’s “pocket” but when we cast our vote, there we are- pocket dust and power lust.
No, it’s not a laughing matter, not even slightly humorous. We vote our conscience and pray for the winners. On the other hand, if we stick our neck out too far, we’re in hot water before we know it!
Where do we draw the line between the walk of faith and the walk of hype? I don’t know. I’m just asking.

Hilarious? YES? Helpful? Not so much. When your email promised to share the emails between you and Barak I was thrilled… I was very much wanting to read how you bridge the gap between so much of what Barak stands for socially and what Jesus stands for on those same social issues…you are too smart not to understand the concerns of other Bible believing Christians and if there is more substance than just idealistic words than I’d love to hear someone like you address them. You have an insider’s understanding of how the other half of us Christians feel on social issues and if we could isolate specific issues, let’s just go with abortion— if you are going to vote for and openly endorse someone with the most aggressive pro choice record it would be nice for me to have an understanding of how you got past that. For obvious reasons I cannot address each issue that concerns me. You, however, can and you know the hot button issues and where you see redeeming value to overcome these, it would sure be nice to have you share it.

“Liberation Theology” huh? Seems to me our lack is in the area of spiritual poverty. I have long been a Donald Miller fan. I first started reading your books when you spoke at Belmont University. I have read each one several times and consider them important pieces of my spirtual development. When I saw that you were giving the closing pray at the DNC, I was not really surprised. But now reading your blog and finding out that you are a Obama supporter is a bit surprising. I agree with you on some of the points you made in your interview, but I do not feel that Obama is going to be the answer to those issues. I am just surprised that you would take such an open interest in supporting him. I am sure you knew before blogging about this that there would be a clear division between people who love your writing and have come to consider you a friend through your writing. There are those who completely agree and of course those who completely disagree. And maybe a few like myself who sit somewhere in the middle. It seems that you know the issues and know where you stand on them, but your support of Obama feels sort of like a hollywood socialite with an “Obama is my Homeboy” t-shirt. Just someone else using whatever influence they have to try to get easily influneced Americans (or even younger voters) to vote for someone. I do not think you supporting Obama is wrong, and I do not necessarily think you speaking openly about that support is wrong. I’m just afraid you may have crossed a line with people who hold your writings very close to their hearts.

Hi Pam,
With all respect, it is folks like you and me with decent incomes who have the luxury to muse that “our main problem is ’spiritual poverty.’” And spiritual poverty is very real, don’t get me wrong. But material poverty is spiritual too, is what I’m learning I guess. The great news: We each get one of the synoptics! In one Gospel, Jesus says ‘blessed are you poor.’ In the other, he says ‘blessed are the poor in spirit.’
I guess this debate has been going on for awhile.

Don–
I love your books. You’re thought-provoking and a great writer. But I can’t imagine supporting Barack Obama, personally. Consider: He’s on record as supporting the confirmation of activist judges who make laws from the bench–the job of our elected officials, not guys in black robes. Second, Sen. Obama is pro-abortion & all the way–somehow that doesn’t jive with Psalm 139 and such passages. And, unless I’ve misunderstood his actions and words, he’s a racist. I mean, sitting for twenty years under the preaching of Jeremiah Wright–who praises Louis Farrakahn and uses similar rhetoric–says something. And, in describing his bigoted grandmother, said she wasn’t bad, just “a typcial white person.” If I said that about a “typical” non-white person, I’d be accused of a racist statement, and rightly so.
How did you deal with these issues?
Peace,
Joel

Your comments in an AP story from the Convention were right on. Amen, brother. Thanks for giving voice to what many of us believe. — Jennifer in Iowa
RE, the following from AP, Aug. 27, 2008:
Miller was a loyal Republican but said he left the party, in large part, because he thought Republicans pandered to evangelicals on abortion and gay marriage to win votes without accomplishing much.
Democrats are “reaching out to us, and I’m not naive as to why — they want our votes,” said Miller, who gave a two-minute prayer to close Monday’s convention session. “But they won’t get them and keep them unless they continue the momentum of adopting policies that promote the sanctity of life.”
Miller cited progress along those lines — including on abortion. His other priorities — poverty, global warming — also reflect a widening evangelical agenda that might benefit Democrats, if not in large numbers in November then in future elections. Miller also said he’d leave the party if some Democrats keep mocking people of faith.
“I’d like to see Obama address that — say that voice is no longer welcome,” he said.

Don,
I am currently reading “Searching for God Knows What” and am truly enjoying it. I’ve been a Christian for a long time, but I tend to be a “doubting Thomas” who has been disgusted by the people who call themselves Christians, but more or less make Christianity out to be a legalistic Religion. Your perspective on Christianity through your writings has helped explain many of my thoughts, concerns, doubts, etc. constantly running through my mind, and has helped me truly to understand God, Jesus, and the writers of the Bible from a different perspective that is beautiful and meaningful, and not the least bit religious.
My next point is that I am somewhat disappointed in your public support of Obama. I am not to judge you on your political preferences, but from a moral and sensible standpoint, I don’t see what the appeal is about the man, other than he is a nice guy and a good motivational speaker. I commend you for taking a stand regarding abortion and Christian faith as it pertains to the “left”, but it’s important to understand that by supporting Obama, you are supporting the party and its values as a whole. Not that the Conservatives have all of the answers or are faultless, but I guess support of such a liberal candidate who can’t even answer when life begins is somewhat disappointing.
Regardless, I am still a big fan and hope to meet you some day.

I must admit, I was fooled when I read the first correspondence. But then, they all looked so familiar. Is he sending the same emails to everyone? No way, if Santa can deliver to millions in person there is no reason why Barack can’t deliver to millions on the net. Surely he has no elves, but I think that staff is plentiful. People seem to like change. Do you like the way things are going? The McCain campaign doesn’t anymore.
On a lighter, I am a Christian, and even a former Sunday school teacher. I have never been a professional Christian (got paid to be one), but I have known a few. I have also known some politicians and policy makers, Christian ones even, a few of them. Would you believe that? I taught a few of their children in Sunday school. Never any “Black” Liberation Theology, or “White” Liberation Theology either–but then again Liberation Theology originated in North Western South America. So “Brown” Liberation Theology maybe? No, none of that either, I just taught about Jesus. Although, I would say that Barack is brown–not quite black, wouldn’t you all?
Anyhow, my first look at the Barack/Donald topic is: It is cool for young Christians to like Donald Miller, right? And, it is cool for young people to like Obama, right? And of course Donald Miller would make the cool choice on all occasions because he is cool and well liked by the cool Christians and those aspiring to be cool Christians.
Let’s be serious now, Barack Obama is a patriot. He wants what is best for our country, as I think Miller does–especially with the new patriotic awakening he got on his 10 speed. Please let the guy have his political leanings. Really, what would you all expect? That Miller would support Ron Paul? That would be way too cool, even for Donald Miller.
To conclude, I will be tangential but precise:
Abortions are still legal and Gay people get married now. We continue to transfer billions of dollars to China as we purchase their products and they buy our treasury bonds. China continues to abort children at exponential rates in comparison to the US. Adding to this, food cost rose 30%, gas is up 250%, the dollar has fallen by 50% on world markets, and average family income fell by $2,500 since the Bush administration came to office.
Are you better off?
BJ said,

I suppose that the Nancy Pelosi and the Liberal Democratic run house is making all the right moves, right. How much better off have things been since they were voted in to office? The 100 things to get done in 100 days was suppose to save the US, right? All it did was drive cost up for our small business so the cost was pasted on to the common folks like us.I think the approval rating is down to relatives and staffers for the Congress. The American people need to get real here and vote for someone who wants to drill for more oil so we have more alternatives. Drilling is not the save all end all answer, but more oil can not hurt us.

Don,
My two oldest kids discovered your books and loved them. You are in a position to influence many people, I just hope and pray you don’t influence them politically.
It is with a frustrating and disappointing curiosity that I struggle to understand how anyone who claims to follow Christ could endorse a candidate who favors abortion on demand, favors partial-birth abortion, and even favors denying life-saving medical care to infants that miraculously survive an abortion and are “born alive”. That is infanticide, my friend, and it breaks God’s heart.
I really appreciate your message calling on the bride of Christ to care for the widows and orphans, and I pray that God uses you for His great purposes to further those ends and for His glory. But please be aware of the horrible witness you present when you endorse a candidate, that if he is elected, will condemn millions of the most defenseless and innocent among us, to death by abortion.

Your support of Obama is disheartening.
Yet, the truth is that more and more Christians are being led astray by false beliefs. I listened to yours and Derek Webb’s podcast about “peace”.
Sir, peace only came through war. Have you mistaken the Scripture when it says, “there is a time for war, and a time for peace?” America is a GREAT country that has the means to defend…not just for ourselves but to protect others. Not a lot of countries can do that for themselves. And sitting by and not taking action is a sin. I don’t understand what authority you grant to yourself to only obey the “New Testament.” But, after 9/11 - the last straw was drawn. And we are in the defense.
You can believe the liberal lies. But you are not doing any American a favor.

Mrs. Robinson,
Thanks for commenting. Your comment, however, fails to land a point based in logic. I fear it is largely emotional, and I am beginning to notice that many who are frustrated with my support for Senator Obama aren’t grounded in fact. I support the senator because he can decrease the number of abortions, and he has also stated he believes war is sometimes necessary, an idea I completely agree with. It feels like you are coming from a prejudice, ill informed. i mean no disrespect, but I won’t be insulted or shamed for things I do not believe. Honestly, Mrs. Robinson, you sound like a country and western lyric. Who have you listened to on the other side of your “two-sided” paradigm, and did they have anything to offer you? Thank you for your consideration.

And just a note for some who have chosen to post here: it is entirely possible to be a Christ-follower and not toe the party line. It’s too simple to think that it’s only about one issue. Think about it: war isn’t very pro-life, is it? If it is, may we ask, to whom? We should not think that God only blesses America. We are not allowed to not think. Let’s respect authority, bend our knee to the Lord, but challenge what we are being fed. 9/11 was probably an inside job. The economy may not get better for a long time. Abortion is one of many important issues (like foreign policy, health care, etc.) Let’s not get all high and mighty because we feel entitled to it. Entitlement is a sure way to fall.

Thanks for your comment. I wanted to respond with some reasoning in regards to abortion. A closer look on the subject showed me the abortion rate increased under Bush, while it had decreased under Clinton. That revealed the issue is more than legal, it is also cultural and economical. Two pieces of legislation were proposed last year, by Democrats, that would decrease the number of abortions, and Barack Obama supports those. In addition, Barna Research, an independent research organization released in August that Obama won in 18 of 19 categorical values that were important to Evangelicals. I think I came to the conclusion that the issue was not a Republican or Democratic issue, but much more complicated. So that is the reason I chose to support Obama, at least on that issue. There is much more.
That said, I am grateful you wrote in and hope there can be civility between those of us who are Christians.
As for these phrases in your comment:
“It blows my mind and makes me very sad…”
and
“Obama is anti American, anti Israel and anti human rights”
and
“Wake up”
and
“It isn’t cool.”
Were the kind of things that some (comparatively few) evangelicals would say that I felt were rather empty and caused me to look further at some facts rather than relying on emotion or empty rhetoric. And looking further at the facts led me to support Barack Obama.
But I do not believe the world is black and white, and that we have a earthly hero that is going to make everything allright. My stance is that Obama as President would make some things better. That’s really it. I tend to think the hype is more about identity than reality.
Best.

Hey Don,
While I haven’t always agreed with you, I’ve enjoyed your honest writing. I know that the last thing you want here is a debate over politics, but since so many of the comments here that are critical seem to focus on abortion, and you have countered that according to your research, abortions went up since Bush has been in office, I thought I’d add my two cents.
The fact is, the study you’re referring to was flawed, and has been refuted by a major Guttmacher study which showed that, in fact, abortions have decreased under Bush. Here’s the link:
http://www.factcheck.org/society/the_biography_of_a_bad_statistic.html
That being said, I don’t expect you to change your mind at this point based on one obscure comment and one internet link. I’m sure there are a number of reasons beyond abortion that factor into your decision, and while I disagree with you, I don’t dismiss those reasons out of hand. And you’re right, reducing the number of abortions will ultimately have much more to do with men taking on the responsibility of fatherhood and mentor than who gets elected. We can both pray and work toward helping that kind of change become reality. Take care.

I see that comment is back up. Maybe it’s one of those things where comments have to be reviewed before they’re posted. In any case, thanks for letting me put in my two bits.

Although I don’t support Obama at all, I still found this post very funny. And you’re smart enough to know that they aren’t really personal, so I won’t call you crazy. Hehe.
In all seriousness, and as cheesy as it sounds, reading your words have really changed my life. And I really am not exaggerating one bit. I don’t want to be seen as a person who merely reads your books and says “You’ve got a point there, Don.” or just thinks you’re right and goes off unchanged. But I really FEEL changed. And as much as you are a great writer, I don’t really mean that YOU changed my life, but that God has slowly been revealing Himself to me, and your books were tools for Him to use. Especially Searching For God Knows What. I enjoyed Blue Like Jazz, but I think SFGKW is the book I really needed. I am grateful that you have given God new ways to speak to me. And I like how you write your books not so that people like YOU and think YOU’RE cool, but so that maybe people will love GOD, and love Him even more if they already do. Since finishing both books, I’ve been reading my Bible probably 2 or 3 times as much as I did before. I’m reading Psalms now. It’s a very beautiful book.
So back to your post. Although I do not support Obama and am actually hoping for a Republican victory, I wish that it didn’t matter, outside of politics I mean. I see that because of this have really been questioning your morals and your authenticity as a Christian. I mean you’re supporting Obama, and I do not, but it is still VERY obvious to me that you love God very much. And despite my opinion, I was VERY excited that you prayed at the DNC. I’m happy you did. And I don’t wish that you would have prayed at the RNC, because God didn’t want it that way. And that’s that.
I don’t know if you’ll read all of this, but I’m happy that I have found this blog and looks foward to reading other posts. And I think I’m done.
I hope you have a great day

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out these e-mails are just SPAM. I was a missionary in the south pacific on the island of Tanna. A local pastor received letters from Benny Hinn’s ministry asking for money. The poor pastor, not knowing what the “big city” or what western civilization was like actually though Benny Hinn was asking him directly and personally for money. I had to burst his bubble and tell him the truth..
I hope you realize those e-mails a so generic… if he was so “nice” he would of told you about the hippie chick you wanted to get together with, and commented on the starbucks..

Hey Don,
I’m sure you’ve had a million people tell you this, (and frankly I feel pretty lame writing it as a comment on a blog that you will probably never read) but I really liked your books “Blue Like Jazz” and “Searching for God Knows What.” I read them both at points in my life where I was going through some tough questions and re-evaluating my values. While I didn’t just adopt yours, your words got my heart questioning.
That being said, I also really appreciate your objective view of politics. Before I went to college, I remember saying I would never support a party that endorsed abortion. Now, I find myself in an entirely different point. I actually read a paper I wrote several years ago that gave a point-by-point explanation of why it was un-Christian to vote for Democrats. My bro (who got me to read your books) showed me the paper, and we laughed a little. But I really felt ashamed of how ignorant that sentiment is, and scared for how many Americans share(d) that belief with me.
I really appreciate your gracious response to Grace S. (above) and will likely steal some of those points for later discussions. I need to read up on this more. (As a side note, I find it interesting that 7 of the 9 Supreme Court justices who ruled on Roe v. Wade were political conservatives.)
I also enjoyed the part of your blog about Al Gore, and how you’re facebook friends with him. Which made me realize, I’m not even facebook friends with Al Gore (I just listed him today). Then I realized (perhaps more plainly) that I’m not friends with you. I mean, I know we’ve never met, but I think it’s time. Or maybe you have to read my books first?
Cheers,
Nate K
P.S. I haven’t written any books, I just wanted to sound cool.

Don-
I don’t know if you read these things, but thanks for making me laugh. I heard you speak once at the Upper Room in Edina,MN. I even met you. You said something that I will never forget, “Life is hard, learn to make a mean margarita.” To which my friend and I lost it with laughter. When we met, I hadn’t read, “Blue like Jazz,” (or any of your books for that matter), but my friends had and were nervous to meet you. So I decided to introduce them to you, and I had this secret fear that you were going to ask me if I liked the book. But what you said that night made me curious because your faith had action to it. So that night I borrowed my friend’s copy, which you signed. Then I bought my own. Anyway, all this rambling to say that I like that you write how you talk. You mean what you say. The guy that I heard from the stage, is the same guy in the book. Frankly, I find your support for Obama refreshing. Thanks for staying strong in Christ, and strong in politics. I normally vote republican, but your prayer at the DNC has me thinking. Oh, by the way I finished the book in two days. I even took it out to eat with me. I call them just me and Jesus dates. Anyway, the waitress said a girl had just given her a copy of your book to show her a different view point on Christianity. I think God was trying to reach her. I finished your book over a medium steak. God reached me through your book. Keep up the good work in Christ.

Dear Barack,
I sure hate the idea of the TV’s being switched over, their are many people who can’t afford cable and can’t afford to do this switchover thing,I hope you please think about just forgetting about this switch forever. It makes us sick when the gov.t tells us how we can watch TV and what we have to do in order to watch it.Please cancel Feb. 19th. Thank you. Mary
