An Update on Lucy

I put together a quick video of Lucy. She’s a bit bigger now. Yes, I am that guy. But honestly, if you had a dog this great, wouldn’t you be obsessed? She is very smart. I tried to teach her to sit and stay in English but she only responds to Latin, which, if you think about it, is quite smart because it is a root language.

Subsisto, Lucy, Subsisto!

(The song is Sinead O’Connor’s “No Man’s Woman”)

I love your dog! Puppies are cute, but labs are the best. Thanks for sharing the video.

  2. sean says:

    your dog is awesome

I’d make video’s about her too

I have a lab named Rosie. She’s just tops.

    enjoy yours.

  3. allison says:

    way cute!
question: how much of the texas stuff is she allowed to destroy?

  4. Cierra says:

I hope she chewed those boots to pieces! They’re just all wrong…. lol.

  5. Bryan Catherman says:

I forgot how much puppies chew on EVERYTHING. My lady labs are a bit older now so that’s stopped, but the desire to lick face never goes away. (Unfortunately, neither does the desire to lick their own rear ends.)

  6. Deeleea says:

Lucy’s delicious, and as for being that guy? I’m that girl; I fight it real bad… but still, can’t help myself, my baby? A Lilac Burmese called Lulu.

  7. dewde says:

lol heaven help you if/when you father an actual child. until that time, great surrogate bro.

  8. I can see a memoir: “Lucy & Me”

  9. Chelsea says:

this is beyond precious. sorry about the rug…and the lamp. she’s a beautiful lady.

  10. Chad Miller says:

Keep posting about Lucy. My Lucy is a Plott Hound and we rescued her almost 2 years ago. She adds so much to our lives! Don’t be ashamed of your love for your dog. We are all a little sappy with our dogs!

  11. Dedra says:

Everybody needs a dog like Lucy! She’s great! Made me smile this morning… thanks!

  12. jolie says:

    ok, a few things:
    1. she is way cute
    2. I love how many times you taped her destroying things. like, you were more concerned about taping it then being like, hey! stop chewing my couch!
    3. the part where you folded her ears back. heee.

  13. jolie says:

also, sorry I just have to correct my grammar: then should be than.

  14. susieq3c says:

Awh! My kids loved watching that video! We have a Lucy, too. She’s a pound puppy…and the goofiest dog on the planet (we have a Lizzie and a Molly too)

Enjoy your little lady! She’s adorable!

  15. Matthew Lane says:

man’s best friend. i miss my pup.

  16. jane b says:

    That dog is incredibly adorable!

  17. J.T. says:

I am totally that guy, too!
We have a yellow lab/pit bull mix that’s 4 years old (Pixy), and a white lab/husky mix that’s about 9 months (Cash). We’re hoping to get the whole lab set, I guess. Collect ‘em all!

Your Lucy is a beautiful girl – the chocolate ones are really the best. But here’s the real question – does she have a Dogbook page on Facebook? That’s when she’s really arrived.

    pets and skwatches,
    J.T.

  18. bradford says:

of all the times i thought about commenting on your blogs, now you’ve got me.

i’ve always loved the song and this is simply freakin’ hilarious.

go lucy. keep don’s world full of surprises.

don, i always appreciate your ability to make me think one minute and then make me laugh. yours is the only blog where i read the entries i’ve missed when it has been a while since i’ve checked in. it’s like a present everytime.

    thanks!

  19. Patrick says:

Chewing on the “everything about Labrador retrievers” book was priceless!

  20. Izi says:

I am equally obsessed with my own lab, Molly, who I have shared 11 funny, funny years with. She understands English perfectly, just doesn’t speak it. Fortunately, I’ve learned a great deal of dog. At 11, she’s more content laying in a patch of sun than chewing bad cowboy boots, but still loves to go camping with me. :) Don, it’s okay that you’re that guy. Enjoy the love!

  21. Meg says:

Haha, I love her! It’s going to be hard writing now that you’ve got a lady like that to take care of.

  22. Jenn says:

boy, are you in trouble! my uncle had a black lab named lucy – definitely something about lucies!

  23. Kyle says:

    Don-

We have a lab/american bulldog mix…and he also HATES 2L pop bottles like lucy. He HATES the labels and HATES the caps.

  24. Dee Wilcox says:

Ahh, love this! We rescued a little black lab pup near the end of November, and they look about the same age. Same antics, too! The difference is that our Sydney is more likely to stalk and pounce on Annie, our older lab, than a cowboy hat. Annie was good for my heart, but Sydney brings an ornery playfulness that is just too much fun. Thanks for posting this!

  25. dixi burnett says:

wow, what an adorable video. Thanks for sharing a piece of your heart with the rest of us! by the way, our puppy chewed through a lamp cord too, and our macbook powercord, and two cell phones, and several ink pens (on the carpet)… so good luck with lucy!

  26. Niki says:

Never be ashamed of being “that guy.” I was “that girl” about my Sassy (my incredibly intelligent husky-corgi mix whom I lost to cancer in May), and I have hundreds of photos–but only a few short videos. I’d give anything to have more videos.

Lucy is precious and a ball of mischief! There’s nothing like puppy love.

  27. donmilleris says:

how cool is it to hear from so many dog owners! and lucy owners, too.

Niki, i am so sorry about Sassy. it is a bit strange that we get so attached to our pets, but it’s also remarkably human, and by that i mean something God put in us, just to get attached to things. like our hearts are magnets. i dread the day i lose lucy. she brightens the house so much.

i’ll keep the pictures and video’s coming. THANKS…

    don

  28. what a beautiful dog! I love chocolate labs.

The end when she’s under your covers reminds me of a “cruel” (meaning I don’t feel too bad about it) game we’d play as kids with any family dogs. We called it the “dog intelligence test” and we would throw a large blanket over him/her and see how long it took for them to make their way out. The less intelligent dogs were the most fun. In my qualified opinion, your dog seems very smart.

  29. Suz says:

    One-word tip: rawhide.

  30. janp says:

dogs always make me smile/laugh…I have 4 myself Does anyone remember the FUN GIRLS from Andy Griffith, Daphne and Skippy? I have renamed my 2 girls after them b/c they are THAT CRAZY. “hello doll”!! Would not dream of giving them up just to save my possessions that they sometimes mess up…carpet, back side of house (wood panels), pillows, sunglasses, etc. Those things never show me love like my dogs. Heaven sent.

  31. Abra says:

I have been wanting a puppy, but now I am re-thinking the whole idea after watching yours

  32. Jen says:

She’s my puppy (an 11 month old boxer) in a lab body. Down to the folded back ears and love of chewing on plastic soda bottles…and books…and… :-) Enjoy it. It’s a lot of work, but she sure does make me laugh on a daily basis, which I wouldn’t trade for anything.

  33. Rosa Culp says:

    she’s a looker alright!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. Nikki says:

I love Lucy! She’s fantastic and the video is spectacular. I’ve been a dog owner for many many years, as a matter of fact, my current dog is 15. She’s amazing. I now live with roommates and I had to leave my dog with my parents for a bit till we get settled. It’s amazing how much comfort you feel with a dog and how much you miss them when they aren’t around all the time following you around.

  35. Kim says:

    What a sweetie!

It’s amazing how good it feels to walk in after a day at work and have such LOVE greet you – no matter how bad of a day it might have been, it all melts away in the face of such exuberance. I wish I had my puppy’s capacity for unconditional joy…
The lessons she has taught me far outweigh the time spent caring for her and cleaning up after her.

Thanks so much for posting this! That shot of her tearing through the house in leaps and bounds is pure magic.

  36. kinsey ward says:

this made me laugh out loud. and therefore deserves a job well done comment!

  37. Ellen says:

    Lamp cord $75
    Multi colored cowboy boots $400
    Sofa cushion $750
    Puppy video….priceless

  38. Loved the video! What a cutie she is. Makes me miss having a dog.

  39. Hope says:

This is possibly the most ridiculous video + soundtrack combination I’ve seen. Not in a bad way please understand; but in an endearing, silly way that makes a person laugh out loud, involuntarily. Very cute. But silly, for sure.
I have a horse that I credit with understanding Portuguese and higher level mathematics. Now I’m inspired -if I ever make a video clip of him, I think I’ll go with something Aerosmith…

  40. Brin says:

    Don -

Okay, so I went to Fusion in Dallas several months back with my tattered copy of Blue Like Jazz, hoping to meet you. I even said a special prayer, you know, asking God if He’d work something out so I could meet you. (Only it was way more eloquent than that.) And then… He did. You passed right by me. Even made eye contact. And I might have said ‘hi’, only… only…

…my chocolate lab puppy, Millie, had mauled the side of one of my shoes. And I didn’t notice until I was standing in that church walkway. And I couldn’t meet Don Miller with chewed-on dog shoes. No way. :)

Lucy is beautiful! (And if she’s anything like Millie, she’ll adore chewing on a guy’s sock… just tie a few knots in it. Better yet, stuff a tennis ball in there AND THEN knot it up. And, if you haven’t heard this a hundred times already, give her a can of tuna in water every week. Labs dig tuna, and it’s great for their coat.)

Next time I’m going to introduce myself, dog slobber and all!

  41. Tk says:

You are CRAZY…but I guess it’s in a good way :) What we are willing to sacrifice for “those” we love…sigh…!! I mean what are material possessions anyway?! what means more in the big picture? possessions or love?

  42. Dwayne says:

    Don:

Glad you’re that guy. The video made my day!

We used to have a chocolate Lab, and seeing Lucy makes me want one now! She is a beautiful lil’ lady!

Hmmm…Lucy on the keyboard, huh? Ghost…er..I mean, puppywriting, perhaps?!?

On a completely unrelated theme: Was great to hear/meet you at the LeadNow in Dallas. I’m the guy who asked you to sign Blue Like Jazz for his friend turning 50…it made his week! Thank you.

Already registered for this fall…can’t wait.

  43. Carla says:

You must have loved the book “Marley & Me.”

    No, that’s a compliment. Really.

  44. guitarmama says:

I no idea when I named my (human)daughter Lucy 9 years ago that there would be so many dogs named Lucy out there. Every other living Lucy I know is a dog. I’m not sure what to think about that. Oh well – your Lucy is adorable, and so is mine. :)

  45. sarah gaila says:

my dogs name is lucy too… mine is a boston terrier.

it is easy to be obsessed with lucy’s … this one is precious.

  46. Alan says:

Dude, This is totally unrelated to your blog, but I just got your twitter text and I notice you are beginning to edit “a million miles”. Thank God! Let’s crank it out. There haven’t been any new Donald Miller Words in years!

Sorry sorry, I know it’s gotta suck to throw down an NYT best seller and then listen to people like me complain….

  47. Courtney says:

my brothers and i used to put a blanket over our cocker spaniel’s head like you did with the sheet, so that he’d look like “Pete” on Pete’s dragon. if you’ve seen it, you’ll know what i mean. and if you haven’t seen it, you should. lucy is awesome!

    love that song btw.

  48. Joan Hill says:

We’re a small church – looking for a small group study we might all do together leading up to Easter.
We saw The Open Table and liked it. Would it be appropriate to spread over five weeks – could the DVD be divided or is it? and why doesn’t Thos. Nelson or anyone seem to know that it’s five weeks?

    Anxiously awaiting reply.
