Hey Don,

I was wandering around your blog and found this under your tag 'super interesting'. I haven't been an active reader on your blog since shortly after you finished the ride: well tour. Then I found your DC mansucript and now I'm all things "A Million Miles..." (your tour, your tweets, catching up on a year's worth of your posts) I'm kinda scaring myself, lol.

Anyway, it was really great finding this by accident. I just visited my younger brother (he's 37) in a prison near Waco. He's been there about 14 years. And he's got a 13 year old son. It's so heartbreaking to see him in there and even more to think that he may go right back in once he's paroled. (This isn't the first time I've heard the statistics you quoted). It's so comforting hearing about what IS going on positive in the prisons as oppose to the other stuff I hear. I saw some members of a church coming into the prison while we were there and was thankful. However, so much more could be done. I think. Not sure what though.

Thanks, glad I came across it.

Great story on story. ;) It reminds me of Jesus teaching by parables. I think the power is in the ability to experience the story. Since story engages the imagination we can place ourselves in it and there by experience it. The experience gives us new perspective and allows us to change. As we grow we can become a different character. Take Jesus' story of the good Samaritan, at any point in our life we could be any one of the characters in the story. Hats off to Catherine!

I honestly didn't read this but the picture of you "dancing" is like looking in a mirror. Bust a move, Mr. Miller.

Thanks for sharing this. I am always inspired by folks like Catherine. I tend to be too passive and allow myself to get stuck or paralyzed. I claim that I am waiting on God but I think it is more just that I let life control me. It is great to see people who take action. God is clearly rewarding that step out in faith. I gather your new book will be all about this idea. I'm looking forward to it.

i love this, thanks for sharing.

i thought a lot about this when i was in college, begging university administrators to incorporate a mandatory service element into all courses of study so that people would experience "impact" education and not just "me" education...it's pretty amazing that we raise and mold people to focus on themselves and then act surprised when it sticks. even Christian leaders are raised with "#1" in mind so some find it a struggle to have a habitual focus outside of themselves.

i love the "story leaders" concept...i've never heard it said that way before.

Thanks for sharing this. What a great story about how we all have the potential to make a difference in the life of somebody who needs it - if only we're willing to take the time and listen. And I think that's what I took most from this: was Catherine's openness to the leading of the Holy Spirit, but not only that but also God's providence. How a seemingly regular day job turned into a prison tour which in turn God used to lay on her heart a more extraordinary story... and look at the lives that have changed because of it. Amazing!

Also, thought this was such a great line... "I wondered how the average teacher, CEO, Coach, and even Parent would plan and execute strategy differently if they saw themselves as story directors rather than traditional leaders." And what a difference it would make... to recognize that each of us has the ability to speak LIFE into other peoples lives:)

P.S. slick dance moves btw.

Thanks for sharing, good sir!

I pass through Cleveland (TX) from time to time...

...and my aunt has worked for years with a prison ministry in West Texas. The true impact of these programs will never be fully measured. And that is the best kind of immeasurable impact.
