A couple weeks ago I sat down with Michael Hyatt, CEO of Thomas Nelson Publishers. Michael has posted the interview on his blog, and I thought I’d re-post it here. Feel free to embed the code on your blog, too. It’s a three-part interview, so I’ll post the rest of it as Michael posts it on his site. You can learn more about Mike here. Thanks Mike.

great interview…liked hearing about how you got started, the Blue Like Jazz process, and how God worked in your life to show you that He wanted you to be a writer.
God truly is mysterious and wonderful. He really does do more than we could ever immagine…
Looking forward to part 2.
“was truly sorry when I finished it.”

Hm. that’s doens’t sound very promising, Michael.
Good interview. I’ll be mulling over the “identity comes from outside sources” thing while I wait for the next installment.
What Shelly said!
Loved your thoughts on identity, and I love hearing stories like yours, of how you came to be a writer, and God’s hand in it all. Very encouraging.
Thanks for posting this here, Don. I loved doing the interview with you!
I found your blog through the interview with Michael Hyatt. I’m looking forward to the release of the book and hoping you’ll be passing through Atlanta on the tour.
Loved the correlation to change-fear-reaction-character. I know in my life there have been changes that took place I didn’t think I could survive yet have now become the changes I’m most grateful for because they now help define my character. @TomMartinATL
I had forgotten about the remaining parts to the interview, so I went back and watched them today.
“True dat” seems to be my only thought; true. dat.
(silly, I know, but sometimes that is all that is needed)
I did really like the part about your dad. God truly is amazing with timing and details. I know NOTHING about your story, but I immeditely thought while listening to you talk about it…God knew he had to first find the love/ the emotion that was there before he met the man, or denial could take place.
Healing can only happen when a wound is admittedly present.
Unusual turns of events are never coincidental. I think God is really cool like that.
Hope you have remembered your words that you lost yesterday. And I hope you aren’t truly feeling as cynical as your twitter in re: tammy made you sound.
seeing you in georgetown.
Alright, I’ve thought about it. Long and hard. I get what you’re saying and on the surface it rings true but if you don the scuba and go deeper I think our identity is that thing that separates us from the opinion of others.
It’s that still small inner voice that tells us we aren’t worthless even though someone is screaming it at us, that we aren’t bad just because we broke the lamp, that we are more than our failed attempts and more than the labels slapped on us by others.
I think true identity comes from spirit. God determines that. When in the shallows all we see are the loud colors of the fish all around but in the deep there is a darkness that filters out the distractions and in that silence is the truth.
Slip on the neoprene and tell me what you see.
