An E-Mail From Haiti

ap_haiti_100113_mnMy friend Randy Williams circulated an e-mail last night that he received from his friend Mark Stuart who is the lead singer of Audio Adrenaline. Mark and his parents started an organization called Hands and Feet working with the people in Haiti. Mark was there when the earthquake hit. If you’re a person who prays, do bow in for them and the people they love. Humbling.

Hi everyone….
Our internet is working finally. So I’m sending this to a few of you….
Everyone here is ok, but we are all very scared. The buildings held up great, but there are several houses right around us that have collapsed. Also, Hotel Cyvadier had major damage, while the brand new three story “peace of mind” hotel was demolished. Francine, one of our teenage nannies was in afternoon school and escaped while the building was collapsing around her because she was sitting by the door…however many of her classmates died yesterday. Many houses and and buildings have collapsed in Jacmel including the hospital. I know most of the news there is coming from PAP, but there is substantial loss of life here on the south coast. We need prayer for wisdom and strength. Its very chaotic here. We were able to buy diesel this morning and hopefully get more propane for cooking tomorrow. Last night was crazy…slept on the dirt in the center of the village…away from the buildings. Tonight we may venture back indoors, but that is yet to be decided. We go in and out to get necessities. The Haitian people are numb and sad to say very used to death, but this has created what seems to be a hypnotic state. I’ve never been in a situation were you feel SO helpless, fearful, and small. The tremors are coming again as i type this. Whoa!!!

  2. Thanks for sharing this. It’s nearly impossible for those of us living in comfort and safety to understand what the Haitian people are now experiencing but it’s helpful for us to hear hear this kind of first-hand account. Now is the time to put action behind our prayers, knowing that God will do His part but that He expects us to do ours.

One way to help is via organizations such as Compassion International and World Vision. I have put links to both of them on my blog or you can link to them here:

  3. praying for Haiti and the stuart family and it’s associates!

  4. Jadell says:

Heavenly Father, we pray for our brothers and sisters in Haiti, including those working with “Hands and Feet.” We pray that by your mercy they would receive what you’re doing in them and for them through Jesus Christ. And we pray that, during this time of internal and external shaking, they would find themselves ground upon your faithfulness and within your love. Amen.

  5. katie smith says:

I fully believe in the huge power of prayer and I know that God is looking out for these people in need.

My heart goes out to all of the Haitian people, they must be in so much pain! To see your homes demolished like that…I can’t even fathom.

    Thank you for this post!

  6. Jason says:

Our prayers go forth to everyone that is hurt all around the world. I know that there are also families in the US that have relatives in Haiti that are trying to reach them. God be with them all!

  7. Allen Rainey says:

    Hi Mark!

I was planning on leaving tomorrow to install a solar power system on Trinity House in Jacmel, part of the Hearts with Haiti complex. If you know of the condition of TH and the kids there, please advise.

    Thanks & Bessings

  8. Mark says:

Thank you for the update along with your service to the Haitian people. I pray that God works thru you and the rest of the organization called Hands and Feet and that God will bring comfort to the fallen and the families that have lost everything.

  9. Jennifer says:

Spent part of my morning just watching news reports on Haiti and the devastation there – it’s heartbreaking. I can’t even begin to imagine the feeling of hopelessness but am glad to see many organizations already sending relief. I second what Ken above had to say, “action behind prayer.”

Anyway, thanks for posting this and the link to Hands and Feet. It’s always good to know who I can pray for specifically.

  10. Maureen says:

I included on my blog today a number of links to relief aid agencies.

I pray for your friend and all the people of Haiti.

  11. Shelly says:

Praying and will post link on my blog to encourage others to know and pray.
I see your Twitter thingy on the sidebar. Wish you would expand on your last tweet in regards to redemption and zeal and posturing. Just curious what your 300 characters thought is…I thought Twitter was used for the meaningful activities one completes in life like, “standing in line at taco bell” kind of thoughts and not deep ponderings using words such as
redemption and posturing. :) that requires a concordamce and an explanation.

  12. Larry Shallenberger says:

And I was about to write a screed for burnsidewriters.com.

    Sorry, Jordan…

  13. Mary says:

Here’s an idea… what if we used this blog to help Haiti? I saw Jonathan Acuff (stuffchristianslike) use his blog to raise $60,000 to build a school in Vietnam recently.

There’s an AWESOME group who deployed teams to Haiti at 2AM last night. Samaritan’s Purse. The reason they exist is to provide physical and spiritual aid when a disaster of large proportions strikes. Not only do they supply shelter, clean water, and medical personnel, but they also send chaplains who are trained to minister spiritually to those in catastrophic situations! To me, this is what it’s all about.

Whad’ya say? Think we could do it?

  14. Analia Valleau says:

You’re right. We need to let the world know that what Pat Robertson thinks/says is not representative of all Christians and actions speak louder than words, especially in times like these.

    Thanks!

  15. Eddy Exantus says:

The fight for independence in Haiti was similar to the american revolution in which the white agrilcultures fought against the British kingdom to declare their independence
In Haiti case, the french government desperately armed the slaves to fight against the island whites agricultures who want to free themselves from the Napoleon regime.
The slaves not having nothing to loose revolt against the Napolean army. and became the first black nation independent of the world
Napoleon’s miscalculation make him lost the island. of Hispaniola
The devil at that time was not involved at all as Pat Robertson ignorantly had suggested

  16. we were to head to the hands and feet project saturday. normally we would already be there and it breaks my heart that we weren’t there when it happened to be able to help out now.

sadly our trip will not happen as planned, there is just too much damage, the country is obviously sill in search/rescue mode. the airport in PAP is closed now, american airlines has cancelled all flights in/out… relief planes only. recovery for haiti is going to require action from many. please donate your time and money as you see fit.

i vote everyone donates here: http://handsandfeetproject.org/ this is where i go every year, they are amazing and good people, they are always taking incredible care of their kids and staff as well as the community around them.

  17. I really enjoyed and appreciated this blog. thanks man.

  18. Heidi Hendricks says:

We provide website support for a singer who donates all her proceeds to work in Haiti. She has connections to two radio stations in Port au Prince who are coordinating connecting people with their loved ones. Go to http://singingforacause.hqters.com/ to fill out a form. Please help us pass the word along so people can connect in this distressing time.

  19. Joshua Neil says:

    This is so crazy.

    Prayer is a must here.

  20. [...] on earth to this nation through prayer and compassion giving.  Here’s Ben Wintherington III, Donald Miller/ Mark Stuart, Adam Mclane, and Andrew [...]

  21. [...] Well the lead singer and his parents have a mission there. I emailed them and everyone is alright. Check out their site to hear what’s up: HandsAndFeetProject.org Also, Donald Miller put up an email from Mark that’s been circulating… email from Mark. [...]

  22. Heidi says:

Supplies through other organizations such as the Red Cross, Catholic Relief Services or World Vision are NOT reaching the town of Jacmel. The roads are completely blocked and there is no way to get anything through. They have been stranded for days with no way to get supplies from Port au Prince which is where the majority of the relief services are going to. NO ONE can reach them. It’s really, really bad. The Hands and Feet Project, which is based in Jacmel is working from the inside out, getting supplies in to Jacmel through donations on their website. They were able to get a boat of supplies in today. Please, please help the stranded town of Jacmel by donating through the Hands and Feet Project. They are literally the only ones helping at the moment. They are working closely with the mayor of Jacmel and the city to get supplies in as quickly as possible. Every little bit helps!!

  23. watch these videos from Ciné Institute’s videos in jacmel, haiti… i don’t feel the need to say “warning” these videos are disturbing as these are real people and this is happening now. i know its hard to fathom if you haven’t been there or anywhere like it, but when you have and you have fallen in love with the people in haiti… your heart breaks to see this, it’s very hard to sit and wait to get there to help, so… i share… love.change.give

i love that they look to Jesus as there only source of hope.

  24. The rest of the reasons I agree with. I fall into the “too complete” area a lot – or at least think I do!

  25. I’m genuinely glad I found this post. I’ve been looking for data on solar energy for ages.Looking forward to reading through more posts about energy.
