Convergence: Something New for Small Group Leaders

by Don on January 22, 2010

For a limited time, you can get a free DVD of Convergence, an interview series I host designed to stimulate conversations for small groups. One of the closest resemblances the modern church has to the church in Acts are small groups that meet in homes. It’s an honor to help bring life to a community that has been thriving now for centuries.

In the series, I interview leading scholars and thinkers about topics ranging from marriage to false idols to spiritual practices. Basically, you stick the DVD in, let it play and after about fifteen minutes you’ve got plenty to talk about.

I’ve been asked to do a series like this before, but I never felt like I fit. I’m not one to look at a camera and teach. But given the chance to sit down with a guy whose written a marriage book and ask him “when’s the last time you thought about divorcing your wife?” is something different. Convergence gave me, and our guests, the chance to be open and honest and engage in very real conversations about where people live. Hopefully, these are the kinds of conversations you have in your small groups.

Here’s a preview of my interview with Phyllis Tickle. On this DVD, the former religion editor at Publishers Weekly talks about the importance of sharing our stories with each other:

So far, we’ve interviewed Dan Allendar, Tremper Longman, Phyllis Tickle, Lauren Winner, Randy Alcorn, Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend. And we’ve only just begun. You can order your free sampler here.

Don,
Thanks for the free DVD. I have a couple of suggestions for you in this series: Stanley Hauerwas and Will Willimon.

i saw this recently and suggested it for our small group. i think our leader guy ordered the sample. interestingly enough it has been my small group (community groups, as we call them) and my recent reading of a million miles in a thousand years (along with some henri nouwen) that has really helped me to the other side of a pretty serious bout with depression. i appreciate your book so much.

Louise,

I am very glad to hear that your small group and my book helped you through a dark time. I’m here to tell you that dark times only make the bright years better. I am thankful for some of the dark years. They’ve made me who I am, and God redeems them. Good stuff. Many blessings.

I’ve watched some of these and I really like them. Thanks!

Very cool. The thinking going on, obviously, is engrossing and pulls you in. Also, you’re looking very L.A. lately. It suits you and you’re not overdoing it, I don’t think.

In case anyone’s interested, watching the first sample video download caused (inspired, sparked) me to write this blog entry about what self-indulgence means, with a particular focus upon exactly how legalism can be, as y’all said, a form of self-indulgence: http://wikkidthoughts.blogspot.com/2010/01/self-indulgence-of-hermione-granger.html

thanks Don,

I’m looking forward to checking it out!

Will N.T. Wright talk to you for the series? You and he would be a Marvel Team-Up I’d be overjoyed to see.

Our community group is getting ready to start Convergence. I’m excited! Also, I wish I knew you in real life. I think we would be friends. People probably think they know you because you’re fairly open about yourself in books and such. But, seriously, if I didn’t live on the other side of the country I would invite you to our community group (although it may be weird to watch your own DVD).

Neva in Alaska January 24, 2010 at 3:30 am

I requested the DVD – thank you so much.

thanks. keep up the great work

Minor point – “whose” was meant as “who has” = “who’s”… but it’s hard to reach the apostrophe key when you have your hands in another guy’s pockets.

We’re using this for learning experience on Sunday AM. Based on the sampler, DVD. It’s brilliant.

I have to admit that it took me three weeks before I remembered it was a DVD. Kept trying to play it in my minivan’s DVD player and kept getting frustrated. But when you use the DVD as intended, it’s brilliant.
