The Mentoring Project is coordinating a nation-wide garage sale to raise funds so we can provide even more mentors for kids. Here is how you can get involved: 1. Decide to host a local garage sale in your area (or in your garage!) and download our easy guide. 2. Get a group of your friends to donate their unwanted stuff and stockpile it in your garage. 3. The night before the garage sale, buy some pizzas and price the stuff. 4. Sell the stuff and donate all or part of the proceeds to The Mentoring Project. It really is that simple. And with the proceeds, The Mentoring Project will create even more programs in even more churches until the church in America provides the best solution for the fatherless crisis in America. You can also help us by retweeting this page or sharing it on Facebook. Thanks so much. We can’t do it without you!

Imagine being nine-years old and asked to visit the White House. It happened last week with one of our mentees, Lehzan. The White House called and asked us to send a representative from The Mentoring Project to the East Room of the White House to help the President kick off National Mentoring Month. We knew exactly who to send as soon as we got the invitation. Willie Welch has been mentoring through TMP from the very beginning, and has been faithful as a mentor for three years now. And Lehzan, his mentee, has flourished because of the relationship. We booked a flight and sent these guys off knowing they would represent us well. Here’s the account from The Mentoring Project blog: Mentoring Project mentor Willie Welch and mentee Lehzan Blake  visited the White House last week to kickoff of President Obama’s new mentoring program. The President and first lady Michelle Obama welcomed mentors and mentees to the Grand East Room to kick off National Mentoring Month. Willie and Lehzan had a terrific time at the White House, touring the grounds and meeting other Mentor and Mentee pairs. “It was exciting for us and such a privilege to be selected. I’d [...]

This evening hundreds of people gathered in a baseball field just outside Austin Texas to remember our friend David Gentiles. It was an honor to present the eulogy. Blue Like Jazz was dedicated to David Gentiles, because David is the reason I am a writer. He was a remarkable human being, and there will never be anybody else like him. For those who knew him, we were truly blessed. And for those who didn’t, may the stories we tell about him inspire you. ••• I heard somebody say every life is a sermon, that every new day we preach a point. Maybe that’s true, I don’t know. It sounds like a lot of pressure to me. And the truth is I’ve been to a thousand or more church services and I can honestly remember the content of no more than three sermons. But if it’s true a person’s life is a sermon, David Gentiles preached the best sermon I’ve ever heard. I’ll never forget him, or what he did with his life. David was a rock of a man and his sermon was love. His life and what it pointed toward will remain with me, and no doubt with many [...]

As I’ve wrapped up the book and started the book tour, I’ve definitely been wearing two hats. Publicly it’s been getting the word out about the new book, but behind the scenes the locomotive that is The Mentoring Project has moved forward at a dramatic pace. In the past six months or so, we’ve hired a new President and a new communications director, and are currently planning our dream team to take our vision forward. As I speak on the road, I’m asking for people to partner with us in providing mentors for young men growing up without fathers, and I’m amazed and encouraged at how many have stepped forward to join us. It’s been humbling but also exciting. Last week I met with the Presidential Task Force on Fatherhood and Healthy Families. While we’ve met before, this was our first work retreat in which we plunged into the issue over an extended series of meetings, preparing our recommendations for the President as he and his team steer the administration around the topic of fatherhood. I was encouraged as we met and talked about fatherhood and fatherlessness that the church in America is poised to make an enormous impact. In fact, [...]

Mentoring Spotlight – Ben and Dennis from The Mentoring Project on Vimeo. The Mentoring Project is providing mentors for fatherless boys through local churches. We have programs in about seven churches in Portland, but around 200 on a waiting list. Besides being a blast, mentoring changes lives. The infrastructure is there, and the mentors are there, we just want to provide the resources and training to change an entire generation through these important relationships. This video focuses on one of our Hero Mentors, Ben, and his mentee, Dennis. Two great guys! Feel free to share their story on your blog, or on Facebook. Thanks everybody, and thanks Ben and Dennis. You guys rock. The mentoring relationship between Ben and Dennis began about 6 months ago when Ben began hanging out at an after school program in SE Portland. After being at the school for a while, Ben thought it would be fun to build a model car with one of the students. The program coordinator then mentioned that Dennis liked to build things. That next week, Ben and Dennis met. There was an instant connection. Although Ben and Dennis have done many fun activities together, it is the confidence with [...]
