Filed Under: Satire Seriously  Are people who get irritated about public cell-phone use actually the selfish ones? I think so. I love using my cell phone in public. I come from Texas so I talk loud. I especially like talking to my doctor about sensitive medical information, spots where I have rashes and that sort of thing. We all have rashes. We all have to talk to our doctors on our cell phones. And sometimes those conversations happen inside of crowded elevators. We are human beings, for crying out loud. But I keep hearing about these people who are irritated with people like me. They think it’s rude. But here are some things I’d like these people to remember: The person I am talking to on the phone is a person, too. It’s not like I’m talking into a Dictaphone. And people matter. What you are actually saying when you get irritated because I am on the phone is that you are more important than the person I am talking to and I think that is selfish. I don’t even know you. You are just a person trying to take a nap at an old-folks home. Cut it with the [...]

From the Associated Press: “Christian Singer/Songwriter Derek Webb to co-host the view during a month-long (June) leave in which Emmy-award winning host Elizabeth Hassleback will be on sabbatical. Derek’s career began as co-lead singer of the Christian pop band Caedman’s Call and continues as a solo artist with much critical favor. His music has appeared on television shows including Greys Anatomy and The Discovery Channel’s The Deadliest Catch.” It looks like The View is trying to keep their evangelical audience in tact during Hasselback’s leave, so they are bringing in Christian men. It’s cool to see media becoming more open about the fact so many of their viewers are Christians. Should make for some terrific conversation, I would think. I’m only frustrated I never got the call! So Derek will host only one episode (give him more!) and other Christian men will be taking the other episodes, including Joel Hunter, Jim Wallis, Max Lucado (Max Lucado has always been a huge draw for the ladies), Gary Haugen, Pastor Rick McKinley, Erwin McManus, Dan Haseltine and Brandon Heath. Mark Driscoll will also be filling in for Whoopi Golberg for one episode in August. Great job, guys! Have fun. I’m available too. Just [...]

Yesterday, Kristi Henson, a marketing executive at Thomas Nelson Publishers asked me to put together my Chrsitmas wishlist. Apparently, Amazon is running a feature in which they’ve asked authors to list some items sold on Amazon we might want for Christmas. I think it’s their take on the “celebrity playlists” you see on Itunes. Anyway, I sat for a while and thought about the spirit of Christmas and offered them a list. As a Christian leader, I took the assignment very seriously. I think it’s a lovely list and I thought I’d share it with you: 1. Some art for the neighborhood. I live in a quaint neighborhood just south of Portland. It’s a sleepy district known for its antique shops, restaurants and coffee shops. Everybody in my neighborhood walks, because we have two of the cities best parks, several grocery stores and boutique shops that bring pedestrians in from the city and suburbs. And there are untold numbers of sculptures, tastefully displayed around the parks and even in front of some of the retail establishments. I thought perhaps I could contribute to the aesthetic with one of these. I live in a condo so I’d probably have to put it [...]

I’m Over This Band

It seems like the trend is to get really into a band, not because they are talented, but because they are new. And then once everybody likes them, to not like them anymore. I like this trend because associating yourself with something new and cool makes you seem new and cool. But the trick is to stay ahead of the newness and coolness.  That’s why I’m completely over “Still Pending” a Portland band that made it big in 2017. I just want to say that now, that I am completely over them. They are trying to do that retro Pearl Jam thing and I’m over it.  They don’t have any video’s from the future but here they are in 09. Totally over it. I’m also over Organic food markets, video phones, electric plug-in spaces for electric cars at supermarkets, reading, dog equality, shock-jock pastors, gaymance movies, wind power and professional American soccer. Over it. What are you over?
